If you have ever begrudged against the banality on how wasteful Valentine’s Day gifts are, you are probably not alone. On a day where a simple bouquet of roses can cost $100 or more, and would likely last only for a couple of days, it’s perfectly understandable why some of us may prefer to give gifts that not only express our love, but can also provide long-lasting value for our loved ones.
In this article, we highlight 5 unique Valentine’s Day gifts to give your loved ones.
#1 Gold (Jewellery or Coins)
As the king of all precious metals and a safe haven asset, gold has been on an stellar upwards trajectory of more than 20% in 2020. On a regular day, investing directly into gold or a gold derivative financial product would have been the recommended strategy. However, in the name of romance, a well-picked jewellery or an Investment Precious Metal (IPM) graded coin may be a better fit as a gift.
For jewellery, the typical gold purity ranges from 22K (91.67% gold) to 18K (75% gold). With the intention of giving nothing but the best for our loved ones, expect the entry level price of 22K gold pieces to start from $300 and onwards, depending on the weight, design and brand. Earrings and rings being smaller pieces have a lower entry price while still being dainty adornments to bestow your beloved.
Alternatively, purchasing an IPM coin instead can give you a better stretch for the buck with the exemption of Goods and Services Tax (GST). One avenue to buy IPM coins is from UOB via online or collection at their main branch. Based on current gold prices, the expected price for a 1oz (approximately 28grams) IPM coin is around $2,500.

#2 Designer Handbags
In 2019, Hermes Birkin handbags clocked a 13% increased in value, topping most other collectibles including art and whiskey. With the point proven that handbags are not necessarily a waste of money, ladies now have a stronger case to justify their never-ending love for handbags. Nevertheless, not all bags are created equal. Given how elusive it is to own a Birkin, prices for one that is preloved start from $16,500. For a lower entry point, you can consider other handbags that are highly sought after from brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton. However, do note that not all bags models from these brands make good investments. Classic models, such as the Chanel 2.55 handbag, are more likely to retain their resale value.

#3 Luxury Timepieces
A present for both him and her, timepieces can be great gifts that offer value which can withstand the test of time. According to Deloitte’s Swiss Watch Industry Study in 2020, almost a fifth of the market are looking to own a pre-owned watch, signifying that the demand for vintage timepieces are still going strong in 2021. However, not all timepieces are able to enjoy the same resale value. Amongst the few, the classic example would be the Rolex Submariner which used to cost an estimated US$7,375 in 2010 but appreciated to US$9,500 in 2020. Whilst such timepieces do carry a hefty price tag, its value will eventually unveil over time. Similar to designer handbags, it takes a discerning buyer to identify the investment grade timepieces.

#4 Investment Grade Wine
Apart from candlelight dinner and roses, the other quintessential aspect of Valentine’s Day is undoubtedly – wine. Based on Liv-Ex 2020’s best performing wine list, the best performer would be Chateau L’Eglise-Clinet, with an increase of 37% in 2020. The trend of wine appreciating over time is unsurprising especially for wines made in France, Bordeaux, which is known to produce almost 90% of investment-grade wine. Purchasing a bottle made from the year of a wedding or relationship anniversary would give a more meaningful twist behind the gift.
Commemorate a significant date with your significant other with a wine from that year’s vintage and perhaps buy a bottle to keep and one to drink. A bottle of Château Haut-Brion, a Grand Cru first-growth Bordeaux wine, will cost you above $1,000 depending on the vintage, while a second-growth Cru class from Château La Mission Haut-Brion from the same estate will cost around $300 to $400 a bottle.

Lastly, an unconventional present that may go the distance – sneakers. With the sneaker resale industry set to hit US$30 billion by 2030, there is an undeniable momentum of sneakers appreciation, especially among the younger male crowd. Putting aside conventional superstition on shoe gifting, this gift would appeal to the trendy ones that appreciate streetwear and culture.
An example of a sneaker investment going the mile would be the 1985 Air Jordans. With its original retail price being US$65, the 1985 Air Jordans can now fetch a price of US$100,000 and above. Apart from Jordans, another highly sought-after sneaker would be Yeezy with the entry price starting from $300 onwards.
