The $100 SingapoRediscovers Vouchers: Who Is Eligible and What You Can Do With It

Have a SingaPoliday with your $100 SingapoRediscovers vouchers

Announced on 17 August 2020, as part of the government’s drive to support the local tourism industry, the $100 SingapoRediscovers voucher is much anticipated and is due to be released on 1 December 2020, just in time for the December school holidays.

With the suspension of many people’s typical year-end travelling plans due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, much hype has been built up about this free $100 local tourism voucher. Here is what Singaporeans should know about the $100 SingapoRediscovers vouchers and what you can use it for.

Only Singaporeans Are Eligible And You Need Your SingPass To Redeem SingapoRediscovers Vouchers

To be eligible for the $100 SingapoRediscovers vouchers, you need to be at least 18 years old and a Singapore Citizen. The vouchers will be issued digitally via SingPass and you can redeem them from 1 December 2020 to 30 June 2021.

The vouchers will be given in denominations of $10 and you can use them to buy tickets for tourist attractions, tours and staycations. This means that you don’t have spend the full $100 at once but can spread them out over multiple tickets. This also means that you can’t just book a hotel buffet to dine with your vouchers; food and beverages (F&B) are excluded from the voucher redemption. However, F&B may be included in a bundle with the core tour or staycation booking.

You cannot combine the vouchers with another family member. E.g. you cannot use more than your $100 vouchers in a single booking.

While those below 18 years old (children and youths) will not receive these vouchers, you (the SingapoRediscovers voucher holder) can buy up to 6 subsidised child or youth tickets. As government is subsidizing $10 off ticket prices for children and youths, potentially your child could be attending the attractions or tour for free or very little cost.

You Must Go Through Authorised Booking Platforms To Redeem SingapoRediscovers Vouchers

As of 16 November 2020, you can use your vouchers for 39 attractions, 178 hotels and 91 tours. These run the gamut from famous attractions (such as Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A. Aquarium, Singapore Zoo) to luxury hotels (such as Capella Hotel Singapore, Shangri-La Hotel Singapore, Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore) to budget stays (such as the Hotel 81 chain).

However, you cannot book directly with any of these attractions, hotels or tours but must go through the five authorized booking platforms. These five booking platforms are Changi Recommends, GlobalTix, Klook, Traveloka and Trip.com.

At the time of writing, only Klook has a dedicated landing page for SingapoRediscovers. Trip.com, Traveloka and Changi Recommends are relatively straightforward travel booking sites, though you may need to spend some time to find the Singapore specific deals. GlobalTix’s website will be launched on 1 December 2020.

You May Not Be Getting The Best Bang For Your Buck By Using SingapoRediscovers Vouchers

A relatively well-known travel tip is to book your hotel stays directly with the hotel to enjoy the best rates. In many cases, this would allow the hotel to earn directly from your stay and thus they would be able to offer you better prices or value by either matching the booking site’s prices or offering you additional goodies such as room upgrades.

Taking the example of the iconic Marina Bay Sands Hotel, let’s see the difference between booking directly with the hotel and using your SingapoRediscovers vouchers at the authorised booking sites.

The example stay is from 9 to 11 December 2020 for 2 adults. Booking through Traveloka is more expensive and you do not enjoy the perks of the staycation deal offered by Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

You Can Redeem The Vouchers Offline, Even Though Online Redemption Is Highly Encouraged

For seniors or Singapore Citizens who do not have SingPass, the government has promised assistance and you can approach one of the redemption points listed below for help to redeem your vouchers, as well as register your SingPass.

You Have Until June 2021 To Redeem Your SingapoRediscover Vouchers

With many Singaporeans are already planning their staycations for December 2020, it may be prudent to book your hotel stays before the release and redemption of the SingapoRediscover vouchers.

Many hotels are reporting high occupancies for December, so your desired room or hotel may no longer be available by the time the vouchers are made available. Given the high interest in SingapoRediscover vouchers and the fact that this is the first time such vouchers are distributed, it is possible that there would be early glitches that may derail your December staycation plans.
