16 Ways To Blow Your Money In 2016

If you really have to spend, consider spending it on these things instead.

Spending is always easier than saving. It is (by the way) also necessary to keep our local economy alive. If everyone only saves, Singapore will fail to exist.

As an annual tradition at DollarsAndSense.sg, we always provide our top recommendations on things we believe that are worth spending on for the year.

If you find an item that you wanted to buy on this list, you are in luck! Go ahead to buy and enjoy it. You have our permission, though you might also need to seek for a second approval from your partner.

Things You Can Enjoy

1. A Comfortable Bed

Buy a bed that is comfortable at both morning and night

If you are spending 1/3 of your life in bed, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be getting one that is up to your satisfaction. A comfortable bed allows you to recharge your energy at the end of each day so that you will start the next day refreshed.

If you don’t like your current bed, change it. Period. It doesn’t matter what Teo Ser Luck or anyone else says. A bed is important.

2. A Good Office Chair

Most of us spend at least 8 hours of our life each day surfing Facebook doing real work in our office chair. This should be enough justification by itself to ensure that you have an office chair that is comfortable enough for you. Moreover, an office chair is the 2nd most frequent item which you will fall asleep in, behind your comfortable bed at home.

If your HR is too cheapskate to buy you a new chair, get yourself a new one. A few hundred dollars and a bad HR department is not a good enough reason to let your back endure the aches each day.

3. Quality Time At A Good Restaurant With Your Parents

We are not sure about you, but whenever we bring our parents out for good food at a nice restaurant, it is almost always money well spent.

There are some things in life that money can’t buy. Quality time with your parents is definitely one of those things.

If you don’t believe us, try it. Take your parents out for a dinner at your (or their) favourite restaurant. You won’t regret spending the money (and time).

4. A Holiday

A great way to reward yourself for all the stress you have accumulated during the year would be to go on a well-deserved break.

A holiday may cost you but it also gives you fresh perspectives in life. It makes you realize how fortunate you are to have a job, education and clean water in Singapore, among many other things.

We are also big believers of immersing one self to the culture of people in different countries. It allows us to understand and appreciate the different values and traditions that people all around the world have, and reminds us on just how big and diverse the world really is.

5. A PlayStation 4

If you are a guy who regularly have other guy friends coming over your crib, it would be a “Bro Crime” not to already have one in your home.

Thing You Can Use

6. A Good Pair Of Running Shoes

We know running is a good form of exercise for most people. We also know that most people don’t bother running as often as they should be. Just hang out outside Bedok Camp on a Saturday morning and watch the healthy 20 to 30 year-olds struggle to complete their 2.4km IPPT run, That would give you a good idea of how “fit” Singaporeans are.

The mere act of buying a good pair of running shoes can significantly improve your odds of winning the daily battle where you struggle with the decision of whether you should spend 20 minutes on a run. And even if it doesn’t help you pass your IPPT, you can still use it for all the Remedial Training (RT) that you will have to clock in.

7. An Apple Laptop

As the saying goes, once you go Mac, you never go back.

The mere fact that our entire editorial team have been using an Apple laptop for years is testimony to that.

8. The iPhone 6S

We stick to the Apple theme by introducing the latest iPhone 6S. While we understand that technology is always progressing and that consumer tech products like smartphones are constantly depreciating, the iPhone is (surprisingly) one the few products that actually retain a relatively decent resale value, even after newer versions have been launched.

9. A New Office Outfit

Like it or not, first impression counts. People will judge you based on your appearance. Buying a new outfit that looks good and fit you well will help with your image and make you feel much more confident.

As an added bonus, you might even be able to impress that colleague of yours whom you have been noticing for quite some time. Yes, this is how superficial the world is.

10. A Robotic Vacuum Cleaner

If you are the person who is tasked with vacuum-ing the home, the thought of getting a robotic vacuum cleaner (also known as a robovac) to help you with this routine task must have went through your mind several times before.

The latest robovac have intelligent programming and can be a huge asset to any proud home owner in the never-ending quest to maintain the cleanliness of one’s home.

If a robovac is for you, who can be against you?

11. A Pair Of Gym Gloves

If you are a frequent gym goer, consider investing in a pair of gym gloves. These gym gloves help protect your hands and offer better grip while you are deadlifting your one rep max. While there are some hardcore lifters who refused to use these, we think it is worth protecting your hands even as you (try) build up your physique.

To Learn

12. Signing Up For Cooking Classes

You can never go wrong attending a cooking class and learning how to cook a new dish. Your family and friends enjoy your improved culinary skills while you save more money preparing home-cooked meals while concurrently impressing them as well. It’s a win-win-win.

13. Learning A New Skill

Remember that awesome feeling of accomplishment whenever you learn something new when you are young? If you, like us, can no longer recall that feeling, then it is time to get back to learning new things in life and to rekindle the spirit of constant learning.

It can be anything. You can learn how to swim, scuba dive, cycle, get your driving license or even pick up a new language (Mark Zuckerberg learnt Mandarin). The point is to get started on learning and to stop procrastinating.

14. Buying Books

Reading books is one of the fastest, cheapest and best ways to build up knowledge. You pick up invaluable knowledge and experiences shared by various authors at the comfort of your couch at home.

15. A Kindle

If you enjoy reading, then you should already have a Kindle. If you don’t, then you should get it.

Now.

16. Upgrading Courses

If you have a desire to obtain better career prospects by upgrading yourself, go for it.

Each year you delay going for that course you know you should go for is a year that you grow older. And when it comes to learning, nothing beats learning it today.
