New Toto Match Game: Are The Odds Better Than Classic Toto

The odds of winning the Match 4 bet type is 1 in 14,125.

Toto is one of Singapore’s oldest lottery games, and even after so many years, it still remains one of the most popular types of gambling, second only to 4D. Since its inception in 1968, Toto has evolved very little, with only small tweaks to its format between 1986 and 2014. This is why the introduction of Toto Match comes as such a surprise.

Toto Match is a new fixed payout game that complements the classic Toto game. According to Singapore Pools, the launch of Toto Match is in response to consumer preferences for a fixed payout model, instead of the jackpot model of the classic Toto game. In the fixed payout model of Toto Match, a higher bet amount will earn you a larger prize, similar to the prize structure of 4D, Singapore’s most popular betting game.

In the classic Toto game, six winning numbers are chosen from between 1 to 49 inclusive, as well as an “additional number”. These seven numbers are unique and will never repeat. Using these same winning numbers, Toto Match offers 4 bet types.

#1 Match Additional Number (M AN)

Odds of WinningPrize Amount Per $1 BetOdds x Prize Amount
1 in 49$30$0.61

In the Match Additional Number bet type, you choose 1 number between 1 and 49 inclusive. If your number matches the Additional Number, you win $30. The number you’ve chosen has to match only the Additional Number to win. It will not count if your number matches any of the other winning numbers.

With a 1 in 49 chance of winning, and a prize amount of $30 per $1 bet, this means that the “Net Present Value” of this bet type is $0.61. In other words, you can expect to win $0.61 for every $1 you bet.

#2 Match 2 (M 2)

Odds of WinningPrize Amount Per $1 BetOdds x Prize Amount
1 in 78$50$0.64

In the Match 2 bet type, you choose 2 numbers between 1 and 49 inclusive. If those 2 numbers are among the 6 winning numbers in the Toto Draw, you win $50. The “Additional Number” is not considered.

This effectively gives you a 1 in 78 chance of winning. With a prize amount of $50 per $1 bet, this means that the “Net Present Value” of this bet type is $0.64.

#3 Match 3 (M 3)

Odds of WinningPrize Amount Per $1 BetOdds x Prize Amount
1 in 921$500$0.54

In the Match 3 bet type, you choose 3 numbers between 1 and 49 inclusive. If those 3 numbers are among the 6 winning numbers in the Toto Draw, you win $500. The “Additional Number” is not considered.

This effectively gives you a 1 in 921 chance of winning. With a prize amount of $500 per $1 bet, this means that the “Net Present Value” of this bet type is $0.54.

#4 Match 4 (M 4)

Odds of WinningPrize Amount Per $1 BetOdds x Prize Amount
1 in 14,125$7,000$0.50

Finally, in the Match 4 bet type, you choose 4 numbers between 1 and 49 inclusive. If those 4 numbers are among the 6 winning numbers in the Toto Draw, you win $7,000. The “Additional Number” is not considered.

This effectively gives you a 1 in 14,125 chance of winning. However, with a prize amount of $7,000 per $1 bet, this means that the “Net Present Value” of this bet type is rounded up to $0.50. This means that, on average, you’ll only win half the amount you bet.

How The Toto Match Odds Compare to Classic Toto

Due to the jackpot nature of Toto, and the opportunity for multiple winners, it is impossible to calculate the Net Present Value of any Toto ticket ahead of a draw. However, based on our previous calculations from past Hong Bao Draws, we learnt that the Net Present Value of a classic Toto ticket in 2025 is $0.51, which is lower than three of the four Toto Match bet types.

This means that while you can still expect to lose money when you buy a Toto Match ticket, you may lose less than buying a classic Toto ticket.

Game Responsibly And Safely

Ultimately, Toto is gambling and should be done safely and responsibly using money you are comfortable losing. No matter how enticing the jackpot amount, it should never be seen as a get-rich-quick scheme that you “invest” in.
