Step-By-Step Guide To Applying And Installing The VEP RFID Tag

Enforcement of VEP will be in full effect from 1 July 2025.

Recently, the Malaysian government announced that the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system will be enforced in full effect from 1 July 2025. All foreign vehicle owners entering Malaysia will need to have a registered VEP or be issued with a fine.

Those who drive regularly to Malaysia in recent years may already be aware of the VEP requirement. The enforcement of VEP at the Malaysia-Singapore land border had been implemented in phases since October 2024. Previously, Singapore vehicle owners who were found to not have registered for a VEP were issued with a reminder notice only. As of 2 June 2025, a total of 231,018 VEP were issued to private vehicle owners.

What Is A Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP)

A Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) is issued by the Road Transport Department to allow entry of foreign vehicles into Malaysia. All foreign vehicle owners are obligated to register for a VEP. Upon registration of your vehicle, you will be issued with a non-transferrable VEP RFID tag to be placed on your vehicle.

The VEP RFID tag is equipped with a microchip and antennae to uniquely identify and track each vehicle. It is also able to show a driver’s record of outstanding traffic fines in Malaysia.

Costs for the VEP RFID tag include a processing fee of RM10 (S$3.03). There will also be a collection service fee of RM30 (S$9.10) and courier fee if you choose to have the tag delivered to your home in Singapore.

Before applying for the VEP, you need to register for a TNG eWallet account. The TNG eWallet account can be linked to your VEP RFID tag so you can pay for road charge and toll fees on the dedicated RFID lanes easier.
