Singapore aims to be one of the best places to work, live and start a family, and this starts with having a world-class healthcare system in which to deliver babies.
Arguably, Singapore has achieved this, having one of the best healthcare outcomes in the world at an enviable cost level. Despite this, we all know that healthcare and visiting the hospital is still by no means a trivial cost for most of us, even after subsidies and grants.
However, Singaporeans can lean on the MediSave Maternity Package, which allows the use of MediSave monies to pay for expenses surrounding the delivery of their baby.
Here’s what expectant mothers and fathers need to know about using their MediSave monies for their child’s delivery costs.

What Is MediSave Maternity Package (MMP)?
As you probably know, there are limits that govern how much of your MediSave you can use, based on what medical procedures you need and the length of your hospitalisation stays.
MediSave Maternity Package (MMP) gives parents the ability to use more of their MediSave savings for pre-delivery medical expenses, delivery costs, and daily hospital charges.
Like MediSave for regular hospital expenses, MMP allows you to use your MediSave monies at both public and private hospitals, though post-natal follow-up and consultation fees cannot be used under MMP.
How Much Monies Can You Use Under MediSave Maternity Package?
How much of your MediSave monies you can utilise depends on whether the birth is from vaginal or caesarean section delivery. These limits are set by the CPF Board and reviewed periodically to account for changes in medical costs.
Currently, here’s how much of your MediSave you can use under MMP at various stages.
Pre-Delivery: You can use up to $900 for pre-delivery expenses, such as consultations, medications, ultrasounds, and other tests.
Delivery: For vaginal delivery, you can between $750 (normal) and $1,250 (assisted) while those undergoing caesarean section deliveries can use $2,150 (normal), $2,600 (with tubal ligation) or $3,950 (with hysterectomy).
Hospital Stay: Under MMP, you can use up to $450 for each day you are hospitalised after delivery, which is typically 3 days ($1,350) for vaginal delivery and 4 days ($1,800) for caesarean section delivery.
This works out to between $3,000 to $6,650 in total.

Do note that the amounts specified by MMP are the maximum amount of MediSave you can use for each aspect of your delivery. It is by no means necessary to use your MediSave monies for all/part of your delivery expenses.
For example, those who have adequate cash on hand might prefer to pay for their delivery expenses and keep their MediSave monies and allow it to grow in anticipation of future healthcare expenses.
Those who are in the unfortunate situation of needing termination of pregnancy can use between $1,500 to $1,650 from their MediSave as part of MMP.
How To Make A Claim Under The MediSave Maternity Package?
To apply to make use of your MediSave for your delivery expenses, you need to ensure you keep all receipts of medical expenses incurred that you wish to use MediSave for, such as pre-delivery consultations, as well as your delivery and hospital stay bill.
When making payment to your hospital, present all these receipts and inform the hospital staff of your wish to use MediSave under MMP. The hospital will then file a MediSave withdrawal request under MMP for you.
Post-Delivery Follow-Ups, Tests, And Immunisation
As mentioned, MMP is designed to allow parents to make use of their MediSave to cover delivery costs. Post-delivery, there will be a continual need to consult the doctor for follow-ups at regular intervals and perform the vaccinations and tests as necessary.
To support parents with these ongoing healthcare costs, you can continue to use MediSave for various outpatient costs, alongside prevailing subsidies.
