Critical illnesses like cancer, heart disease, and stroke are on the rise in Singapore. But fortunately, early detection and treatment often improve recovery chances. However, many basic critical illness plans only cover the most severe stages of a disease. That means the plan may only cover late-stage cancer, and not the early-stage cancer that is increasingly being detected through regular screenings.

Even more concerning, many critical illnesses don’t strike just once. Some have a high likelihood of recurring, yet basic plans stop coverage after the first claim. According to a study by the National Cancer Centre Singapore, more than a third of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, a type of blood cancer that affects the lymph nodes, relapse or die within five years. Lymphoma is one of the most common cancers in Singapore. SingHealth reports that there is a 5% to 15% per year chance of stroke recurring, and only a third of stroke patients recover fully.

This is where multi-pay critical illness coverage comes in. It provides financial support when you need time off to recover and gives you peace of mind that you will continue to have coverage even after the first claim.

Unlike most basic critical illness plans that terminate after one payout, the Singlife Multipay Critical Illness II plan continues to cover you. It provides multiple payouts for 135 conditions of critical illnesses and medical conditions, with a total payout of up to 900% of the sum assured.

How A Multi-Pay Critical Illness Plan Works When Your Illness Recurs

If you have a critical illness plan and are diagnosed with an illness covered by the plan, you receive a lump-sum payout according to the terms stated in the plan. With a multi-pay critical illness plan, however, if you are later diagnosed with the same critical illness or another critical illness, you will receive an additional payout according to the plan’s terms and waiting periods.

Let’s assume Dave suffers a severe heart attack at age 48. With his Singlife Multipay Critical Illness II plan, he would receive a lump-sum payout equal to 100% of the sum assured—enough to cover medical costs and time away from work.  From his first severe-stage diagnosis, his future premiums are also waived. 12 years later, at age 60, he suffers another severe heart attack. Because recurrent heart attacks are covered under the plan, he receives another payout—150% of the sum assured. In total, Dave has already received 250% of his coverage, and his plan continues to protect him against other conditions.

Multi-Pay Critical Illness Plans Cover A Range Of Critical Illness

While the reasons for getting a multi-pay critical illness plan are obvious for illnesses that have a possibility of relapse, what is less obvious is that multi-pay critical illness plans also cover a range of critical illnesses across different stages.

As Singapore’s healthcare system improves, more critical illnesses are being detected and diagnosed in the early stages. For example, over 57% of breast cancers in 2024 are diagnosed at Stage 1, up from 1 in 3 in 2017. In a lifetime, Singaporeans may suffer from more than one critical illness. A multi-pay critical illness plan is therefore beneficial because it allows you to make multiple claims for different illnesses.

The Singlife Multipay Critical Illness II plan allows you to make up to 6 claims across all stages. It covers 75 early or intermediate stage critical illnesses and 60 severe stage critical illnesses. This includes major conditions such as cancer, stroke, and heart attack.

For example, let’s look at Dave again – he is first diagnosed with early-stage colorectal cancer at 42, and receives 100% of his sum assured. At 48, he suffers a severe heart attack, for which he receives another 100% of his sum assured. Finally, at the age of 50, he undergoes carotid artery surgery. The plan pays out another 100% of his sum assured.

By then, Dave would have received a total payout of 300% of his sum assured and still has coverage for future claims, up to a total of 900%.

Additional Support During An Unpredictable Illness

Beyond multiple claims, the Singlife Multipay Critical Illness II plan also comes with extra features that provide coverage and ensure peace of mind:

Additional Coverage for Special Conditions: Receive an additional 20% of your sum assured (up to S$25,000 per life) for any of the following:
