We all have that one friend that will without fail, purchase alcohol from the Duty Free Shop (DFS) when arriving back in Singapore. Sometimes you’ll lend them your passport just so they can purchase more. Each passport is limited to:
- Option A: 1L Spirit 1L Wine, 1L Beer
- Option B: 2L Wine, 1L Beer
- Option C: 1L Wine, 2L Beer
Just how much can we save when we purchase our alcohol from Duty Free Shop at the airport as compared to our local supermarkets? We compare the numbers.

|SOMERSBY APPLE CIDER||$11.30
Buying beers at the DFS saves you the least money out of all three alcohol categories. However, for most beers, you still save about a dollar per bottle, which is a good 30%!

|BACARDI GOLD||$24.70 (1L)||$69.75 (700ml)||$45.05|
|ABSOLUT VODKA (BLUE)||$26.60 (1L)||$71.90 (750 ml)||$45.30|
|GLENFIDDICH SELECT CASK||$74.40 (1L)||$160.65 (700ml)||$86.25|
*Note the differences in bottle size
It’s more difficult to compare the prices of spirits directly due to the differences in volume. DFS tends to sell 1L bottles but the ones more readily available in Cold Storage are 700ml or 750ml bottles. You save the most when you buy spirits from DFS as prices are about half or even one-third compared to buying in Cold Storage.
If we can save up to almost 2 times of the DFS price when buying alcohol, perhaps it’s wise to maximize the alcohol limit on our passports the next time we travel overseas.
