How To Stretch Your Dollar In Malaysia During The School Holidays

Lock in a favourable exchange rate by converting your SGD to ringgit in advance.

The March school holidays have begun and it’s the perfect excuse for Singaporean families to load up the car, cross the Causeway, and enjoy a week of fun without burning a hole in the wallet. With the Singapore dollar still strong against the Malaysian ringgit, every purchase gives you more value for money, especially when you’re paying by card instead of fumbling with cash.

Here’s how to make the most of your ringgit while keeping the whole family entertained.

#1 Enjoy Malaysia’s Exciting Food Scene

Malaysia’s food scene is legendary, and the exchange rate makes indulgence guilt-free.

Enjoy a full family meal at a local kopitiam or mamak stall. You’ll want to set aside a cash budget for these meals, so head to a money changer before your holiday to ensure you bring around some ringgit in cash.

If you don’t have enough cash, however, do not worry as you can withdraw ringgit at any ATM displaying the Mastercard, Maestro or Cirrus logos using your physical YouTrip card. YouTrip does not charge any withdrawal fees for the first $400 per month, though ATM operator fees may cost up to 5 ringgit per transaction and will vary by bank.

However, to really make the most of your eating escapades, consider visiting mid-range restaurants in Johor Bahru or Malacca, which offer a wide range of cuisines at affordable prices.

Many of these restaurants accept Mastercard so you can use YouTrip for payments.  With YouTrip, you’ll get the best exchange rates, zero foreign transaction fees, no hidden charges, and seamless payments throughout Malaysia.

#2 Shop And Shop And Still Save

School holidays are prime time for retail therapy, and Malaysia’s malls and outlets deliver serious value. If you’re willing to travel a little further than usual, Johor Premium Outlets in Indahpura is a favourite for branded goods at deep discounts.

If not, there’s still lots to do at shopping centres like Mid Valley Southkey and Paradigm Mall in JB. These malls combine shopping with family entertainment, so kids can stay occupied while parents browse the many stores available.

This would be a great opportunity to shop at stores such as Brands Outlet, Betty Fashion, or M&B.

#3 Staycation Across The Border

Hotels in Malaysia offer incredible bang for your buck. A spacious family suite in Johor Bahru or Malacca would set you back between $100 to $200 per night. Be sure to compare prices across several third-party websites, such as Agoda and Booking.com, to ensure you’re getting the best price.

Alternatively, consider booking directly on the hotel’s website, as you’re more likely to negotiate a room upgrade in person when you check in.

Hit up one of the resorts in Desaru or Port Dickson for days of beachside fun, pools, and kids’ clubs. Or if you’re looking for a different kind of getaway, boutique hotels in Malacca’s heritage district provide charm and comfort at wallet-friendly rates.

Consider booking online and early with your YouTrip card to get the best deals and avoid disappointment.

#4 Consider The Train When Travelling Into Malaysia

Depending on your family unit, it might be worth travelling to JB and KL by train rather than risking hours stuck in a Causeway jam.

The KTM Shuttle Tebrau is a convenient 5-minute ride from Woodlands to JB Sentral and will only set you back S$5 per trip. Coming back to Singapore is even cheaper, at only 5 ringgit.

From JB Sentral, you can now take the newly opened electric train service (ETS) to KL Sentral, where travel time between KL and JB is just 4.5 hours. One-way fares start from 82 ringgit (approximately S$26). It’s much cheaper than flying directly to KL and may even be a fun family experience.
