Singaporeans are grappling with rising living costs due to global supply chain disruptions, higher energy costs, and geopolitical tensions. Price increases in everyday essentials, including rice, cooking oil, eggs, and other fresh produce, seem inevitable, forcing families to rethink their shopping habits and stretch their budgets further. For households and seniors, where groceries make up a significant portion of monthly expenses, these pressures can be particularly challenging.
Against this backdrop, June brings some much-needed relief. Two of Singapore’s largest supermarket chains, FairPrice and Sheng Siong, have introduced significant initiatives to ease the burden on households. FairPrice has expanded its price freeze programme to cover hundreds of essential items, while Sheng Siong is doubling discounts for CHAS cardholders and offering deep promotions tied to CDC vouchers. These measures help families manage the rising cost of living and ensure that necessities remain accessible.
FairPrice Freezes Prices On 500 Essentials
FairPrice has taken a broad approach by freezing prices on more than 500 daily essentials until August 31, 2026. This initiative covers a wide range of household staples, including rice and cooking oil, fresh and frozen meat, vegetables, milk, baby care products, and detergents. By locking in prices for three months, FairPrice is giving families the certainty they need to plan their grocery budgets without worrying about sudden price hikes.
The programme began modestly in April with 100 items, expanded to 300 in May, and now encompasses 500 essentials. This steady expansion reflects FairPrice’s recognition of the growing strain on households and its commitment to providing meaningful support. The timing is significant too, as this is often when families can expect added expenses due to the school holidays.
FairPrice Group CEO Vipul Chawla has described the initiative as “the truest form of support we can offer,” emphasising that consistent pricing is more impactful for household budgets. Beyond the price freeze, FairPrice has also doubled weekly discounts for blue and orange CHAS cardholders (from 3% to 6%) and waived online delivery fees for them, ensuring that vulnerable households benefit both in-store and online.
Sheng Siong Doubles CHAS Discounts And Offers CDC Voucher Deals
While FairPrice’s initiative focuses on broad price stability, Sheng Siong has chosen to provide targeted relief. Throughout June, blue and orange CHAS cardholders will enjoy double discounts of 8% (up from 4%) at all 88 Sheng Siong outlets. The discounts are available on specific days of the week. Blue CHAS cardholders will enjoy the discounts on Thursdays, while orange CHAS cardholders enjoy it on Fridays. This makes it easy for shoppers to plan their visits around these savings opportunities.
Sheng Siong’s CHAS discounts were first introduced for blue CHAS cardholders in March last year. It was extended to orange CHAS cardholders in January this year. The discounts were originally expected to end this month in June. However, it will now continue until year-end, ensuring ongoing support for lower-income households. Do note that from next month, July, to the end of the year, the discount reverts to 4%.
Sheng Siong is also running a special promotion tied to CDC vouchers. Between June 1 and July 6, shoppers who spend at least $20 using CDC vouchers can enjoy up to 50% off selected staples, including rice and eggs. This promotion is designed to stretch the value of the government-issued vouchers, which were brought forward from January 2027 and disbursed this month.
Sheng Siong CEO Lim Hock Chee underscored the importance of these initiatives, noting that “doubling the CHAS discount and extending support through 2026 is a meaningful effort to help customers make every dollar go a little further.”
According to Sheng Siong, customers saved about $7.5 million through its discount programmes in 2025. These include the ongoing seniors benefit of a 4% discount every Tuesday and Wednesday, a long-standing initiative that supports older Singaporeans.
Beyond Fairprice And Sheng Siong
Giant Singapore boasts three hypermarkets, in IMM, Pioneer Mall, and Tampines, as well as several express and supermarket outlets across the island. Blue and orange CHAS cardholders continue to enjoy 3% discounts on Thursdays and Fridays, respectively, while seniors enjoy 4% discounts on Tuesdays.
