According to Scientific American, 15% of people are left-handed and with that, we can also compute that there are around 825,000 lefties in Singapore based on the latest population statistics from Singstat.
Here are 7 interesting ways you can easily spot a lefty (or a fellow lefty) in your office or the school auditorium:
1) The Positioning Of Their Breakfast

(Source)
You can start by paying extra attention on the placement of your colleage breakfast. Most lefties will naturally have their breakfast on the left of their workdesk for easy access.
Lefties are experts in multi-tasking while using their computers. They are able to munch their breakfast with their left hand while scrolling through reports with the computer mouse using their right hand.
Don’t believe us. If you are a right-handed, try eating your breakfast sandwich with your left hand while surfing the Internet with your right hand, you might find it a lot more unnatural than you expected.
2) Observe The Hand They Use When They Take A Selfie
(Source)
Everyone loves taking selfies and wefies these days and it’s a natural instinct for lefties to use their right hand to snap a selfie. Try asking a lefty to snap a selfie using his or her left hand. It might be tricker than they expect.
3) Notepad And Pens Will Always Be On The Left
(Source)
Take a look at their work desk. You should be able to spot the daily items such as notepad, pens, hole puncher and stapler, on his/her desk. A true blue lefty will definitely have these items set on the left side of the table for easy access.
4) Notice The Way They Do Their Work
(Source)
The high productivity level of the lefties will surprise you! As mentioned earlier, lefties are experts in multi-tasking. Observe if your friend or colleague has the extra talent in scribbling notes with their left hand and scrolling the computer mouse with their right hand simultaneously.
5) Observe The Ink Smear On That Pinky
(Source)
Catch the obvious ink smear on your friend’s left pinky finger. It is extremely hard for lefties to avoid getting ink smeared on their pinky while writing unless they write in an awkward 45-degree manner.
6) Using The Left Hand To Answer The Phone
(Source)
Observe which hand they use to answer the phone. Lefties will always use their left hand to pick up their phone unless the hand is occupied. They will always hold their phone with their left hand as well.
7) Look At Which Hand Their Watch Are Wore On
(Source)
Most lefties will wear their watches on their right hand. There are a few reasons for that. Firstly, it is easier for a lefty to be using their left hand to wear a watch on their right hand, rather than vice versa.
In addition, wearing a watch on their right hand will ensure that it is more hassle free for them to write with their left hand.
