5 Post-PSLE Getaways From Singapore To Escape The Haze From Under $500 Per Person

Exam is over. Where can you travel now before prices go up for the December holidays?

If you’ve been breathing Singapore’s air this past week, you’re already aware of the haze. For families looking for a post-PSLE break, a short trip may be especially appealing. With the written papers already over, there’s a window for a getaway before the December school holiday crowds arrive.

The problem is that the haze is a regional phenomenon driven by fires in Indonesia. Nearby destinations like Batam, Bintan and parts of Malaysia can also be affected. If the point of leaving Singapore is for cleaner air, it makes sense to look further afield, although no destination is guaranteed to be haze-free. Here are five post-PSLE getaways to consider, with indicative flight and accommodation budgets of under $500 per person for a three-day, two-night trip.

#1 Phuket, Thailand

November can be a good time to visit Phuket as the wet season begins to ease, although rain is still possible. It’s an option for families looking beyond Singapore’s closest neighbours, but check local air quality and weather forecasts before booking.

For families, Kata Beach and Kamala are quieter alternatives to Patong. Scoot flies direct from Changi to Phuket. Using an indicative return fare of $236 per person and $150 to $200 for a two-night family room stay, flights and accommodation would work out to about $274 to $286 per person for a family of four sharing a room.

#2 Phu Quoc, Vietnam

Vietnam’s largest island sits in the Gulf of Thailand and is entering its dry season in November. It’s an alternative to central Vietnam, where wet weather can affect travel at this time of year. That said, showers are still possible, so leave some flexibility in your plans.

Long Beach and Ong Lang offer options for a beach break, while the island’s attractions give families more to do beyond the sand. Scoot flies direct from Singapore to Phu Quoc. Using an indicative return fare of $324 per person and $60 to $100 per night for a family room, flights and accommodation would come to about $354 to $374 per person for a two-night stay.

#3 Taipei, Taiwan

Taipei is further from Singapore and offers a change of pace from a beach holiday. November brings cooler weather, while the city’s public transport, night markets and mix of history, street food and outdoor options can keep a range of ages occupied.

The flight cost is the trade-off, given the distance. Budgeting $320 to $430 per person for return flights and $80 to $120 per night for a hotel room gives us an indicative estimate. Assuming the room accommodates a family of four, that works out to $360 to $490 per person for flights and two nights’ accommodation. Taipei comes closest to the $500 limit, so flight prices and room occupancy matter here.

#4 Manila, Philippines

Manila is another option further from Singapore, although it isn’t a guaranteed escape to cleaner air. Traffic and local pollution can affect air quality, and November can still bring rain and tropical storms. Check conditions rather than assuming the wet season is over.

For a three-day, two-night family break, Manila works as a base for Intramuros, the National Museum of Natural History and the food options in Bonifacio Global City (BGC). Using an indicative return fare of $240 per person and a hotel budget of $80 to $120 per room per night, flights and accommodation would work out to about $280 to $300 per person, assuming four people can share the room.

#5 Bangkok, Thailand

Finally, there’s the short city getaway that Singaporeans of all ages love: Bangkok. The Thai capital makes a case for a post-exam break, with November generally marking the start of the cooler season. It can still be hot, so plan for indoor breaks between outdoor activities.

For families with a range of ages, the BTS Skytrain makes parts of the city easier to explore. The mix of temples, museums, markets and large, air-conditioned shopping malls, such as Siam Paragon, also gives you flexibility. Singapore to Bangkok is a competitive route, with several airlines offering direct flights. Allow around $420 per person for return flights and a two-night hotel stay, although the actual total will depend on your dates and room requirements.

Some Things To Keep In Mind

The figures above cover only flights and accommodation for a family of four sharing a room. They are indicative budgets, rather than confirmed booking quotes. Check that the room allows two adults and two children, and whether taxes, baggage or extra beds add to the price. Meals, local transport and activities will also increase the total, so treat $500 as a flights-and-accommodation budget rather than an all-in trip cost. These extras can run higher than expected, especially when we’re in ‘holiday mode’ and a bit more free-spending. Depending on your budget and the kind of break you want, anything from a beach holiday in Vietnam to eating your way through Taipei could work for a post-PSLE trip.
