Pasar malams, the Malay term for night markets, are businesses that open when night falls in bustling Singapore, as vendors bring forth their neon lights and bright decorations to attract passersby and patrons. You can find cheap clothes, food and carnival games there.
To find out where the nearest pasar malam is located, you will have to search for it online. In Singapore, pasar malams stay at one location for around one month before moving to another part of the island.
Usually held in neighbourhoods, these night markets provide some colour and vibrancy to the residents staying nearby. Some stores open as early as 10am and others close as late as 2am.
Pasar Malams In Singapore: Popular Locations And Types
Some pasar malam locations are at Bukit Panjang, Bukit Batok, Clementi, Ang Mo Kio, Tampines, Yishun, Pasir Ris, Hougang, Kampong Gelam, Geylang Road, Punggol, and Boon Lay.
The venue for pasar malams are usually larger open spaces that can accommodate stall tents and a crowd.
The different pasar malams cater to different festive periods in Singapore. For example, the Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar 2024 was held from 26 February to 31 March 2025 in the area surrounding Wisma Geyland Serai (Geylang Serai Community Club). The closest MRT to the pasar malam is Paya Lebar.
The mega bazaar hosted over 500 stalls, and also offered art displays and music performances. But the rates are pricey as it was reported that the cost to rent a food stall ranges from $8,000 to $15,000. After complaints of high rental rates during previous years, which were as high as $25,000, the rents were capped at $15,000 since 2024. However, this does not include fixtures such as fans and overhead costs.
Other than the mega bazaars, there are also smaller pasar malams decorated across Singapore in conjunction with festive periods like Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, and Deepavali celebrations.
For bazaars located near Community Clubs (CC), the CCs usually rent out the space to a commercial company that sets up tents.
Requirements To Rent A Pasar Malam Stall
Permits are usually applied by the event organiser on behalf of the applicant, and one can choose to apply under a company or personal name. Some organisers require stall owners to be Singaporeans or Permanent Residents or a person who owns a Singapore-registered company.
Individual food stalls preparing food & beverages will have to apply for the Temporary Fair Stall Licence from SFA. The application is free for individual stall holders.
Some organisers have strict rules. For example, anyone handling food in the stall has to be eligible to work in Singapore and to possess the certificate: WSQ Food Safety Course Level 1.
