There’s so much emphasis on self-care and wellness these days that companies are also taking a closer look at providing a more all-rounded holistic work environment for their workers.
This has brought on the role of new chiefs solely focused on workers’ mental health and holistic needs, such as Chief Wellness Officers (CWO).
The inclusion of these new C-level bosses reflects a broader trend in organisations acknowledging that a healthy and engaged workforce contributes to higher productivity, lower turnover, and overall improved organizational performance.
What Is A Chief Wellness Officer (CWO)
A CWO is a relatively new and evolving role in organisations, particularly in the corporate sector. As the role is new, there are also other terms to call the role, such as Chief Mental Health Officer and Chief Wellbeing Officer.
The primary responsibility of a CWO is to focus on the overall well-being of employees, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional health.
Here are some tasks of a CWO:
- Developing Wellness Programs: Designing and implementing comprehensive wellness programs that address various aspects of employee well-being, such as fitness, nutrition, stress management, and mental health.
- Employee Engagement: Promoting and encouraging employee participation in wellness initiatives to foster a healthy workplace culture.
- Data Analysis: Using data and metrics to assess the effectiveness of wellness programs and making data-driven decisions to improve employee well-being.
- Collaboration with Stakeholders: Working closely with HR, leadership teams, and other relevant departments to integrate wellness initiatives into the overall company strategy.
- Mental Health Support: Recognising the importance of mental health in the workplace and implementing initiatives to support employees’ emotional well-being.
- Educational Initiatives: Providing resources and educational opportunities to help employees make informed choices about their health and well-being.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Ensuring that the workplace complies with health and safety regulations to create a safe environment for employees.
The general career track for a person to become a CWO is to have work experience working with people, management consulting experience, and communication skills, and it will be beneficial if the person understands the work hazards of working in the company (E.g. A former nurse turned wellbeing officer in a hospital).
Some organisations include the job functions of a CWO into a Chief People Officer (CPO), also known as the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), while others split them into two separate roles. This is usually the case if the company hires thousands of workers and has a lot more HR functions to focus on. A CPO is a people-oriented role with more human resources functions.
While both roles are concerned with aspects of employee well-being, the CPO has a broader and more comprehensive set of responsibilities within the human resources domain, while the CWO has a more specialised focus on designing and implementing wellness programs.
How Much Does A CWO Earn
A role like this is a leadership C-level role and the salary must commensurate with the niche work.
A search on the internet revealed cushy paychecks of $11,000 to $14,000 a month for CWOs, with the jobs coming from sectors including healthcare, tech and consultancy. According to Comparably, CWO salaries in the US range from $68,600 to $187,200 annually, which averages from US$5,716 (S$7,527) to US$15,600 (S$20,543) per month.
Salaries can also vary based on factors such as the industry, company size, the individual’s experience and qualifications, and economic conditions.
Some Companies That Hire CWOs
The CWO role is still relatively new and not as common as traditional executive roles in many organisations. However, some companies, particularly those with a strong focus on employee well-being and workplace culture, have embraced the idea of appointing executives or leaders with a specific focus on wellness initiatives.

The CPO oversees an organisation’s human resources and talent functions. In every aspect of HR work, a CPO is in charge of hiring, onboarding, managing, developing and retaining employees. CPOs are also concerned with the overall people strategy of the organisation, ensuring that the workforce is aligned with business objectives, and managing various aspects of the employee life cycle.
CPOs can also focus on employee wellness and wellbeing, but if a company has many workers, they will prefer to open up a CWO role to handle specifically the welfare needs of workers. The primary responsibility of CWO is to design and implement wellness programs that address physical, mental, and emotional health in the workplace.
CWOs collaborate with other departments, including HR, to create a holistic approach to employee well-being. They may implement initiatives related to fitness, nutrition, stress management, mental health support, and overall workplace health culture.
The two roles can work closely, with the CWO contributing to the broader employee engagement and well-being strategy overseen by the CPO.
