What began as a personal quest to manage anxiety transformed into one of Malaysia’s most exciting wellness ventures.
Co-founders Yang, a former civil engineer, and Steven Toh, a timber specialist, pioneered the cold therapy movement in Malaysia with Polar Plunge. Bringing sleek, purpose-built ice bath systems to homes, gyms, and wellness centres across the region, Polar Plunge is on a mission to cool people down…literally.
From a plastic tub with bags of ice, Polar Plunge has now grown into a full-fledged brand that’s helping people reset, recover, and recharge.
Giving The Corporate World The Cold Shoulder
Before launching Polar Plunge, Yang was working in a consulting firm as a civil engineer, while Steven specialised in timber. It was Yang’s personal search for mental wellness that became the catalyst behind the business.
“I was dealing with anxiety and looking for natural ways to feel better. I started trying ice baths at home. It was nothing fancy, just a plastic tub and some ice, but it helped,” Yang recalls. “The only problem was, buying ice and changing water every session became a real hassle. And I realised, there was no one in Malaysia doing this properly.”
This sparked the idea for a purpose-built, more convenient cold plunge experience.
“I also wanted a name that felt cool but not too serious, something friendly, but still hinted at the cold. ‘Polar’ gave that cold vibe, and ‘Plunge’ felt like action. Together, it just clicked.”
Building Polar Plunge As A Product
While many wellness brands start with community pop-ups or trial workshops, Polar Plunge took a different path. “We went straight into building a product,” Yang says.
But the first few months weren’t easy. They didn’t make any sales for six months as cold plunging was very new in Malaysia, most people didn’t understand it.
Things took a turn when two key moments unfolded. First, a surprise order came in from a customer in Singapore, and shortly after, fitness influencer Jordan Yeoh reached out to them.
“That was the turning point,” Yang shares. “People started to get curious. It finally felt like the idea was clicking, and people were starting to believe in it.”

E-Commerce First, Experience Always
Today, Polar Plunge operates primarily as an e-commerce business, selling their plunge systems directly through their website. Their customers include home users, fitness centres, and wellness spaces. They’ve also set up a showroom where people can test out the product for free, a key part of their mission to make cold therapy approachable.
“Being the first brand here, we’ve naturally become a bit of a benchmark, but we say that with humility,” Yang notes. “We’ve always focused on setting higher standards with each version of the product and taking care of our customers. That’s been our core from the start.”
Plunging Into The Market With Educating
One of the major early hurdles for the founders was consumer education. “Most people thought cold plunging was something only elite athletes did. We had to explain that it’s actually beneficial for everyone to achieve stress relief, recovery, even mental clarity.” Yang shared.
Another challenge? Logistics. “Shipping bulky equipment across Malaysia, and now even regionally, was something we had to learn quickly,” Yang says. “But we’ve since found great partners and streamlined the process.”
Mistakes happened along the way, but the team’s openness to feedback kept them grounded. “We made errors, like any new brand. But we stayed close to our customers, kept listening, and kept improving. That’s what got us through.”
Despite growing recognition, Polar Plunge remains careful about who they work with. “We see Polar Plunge as a modern recovery brand that fits into the wellness and fitness space,” Yang explains. “We’re very selective with the influencers we partner with. It’s important that they bring real, positive influence.”

Names like Khairy Jamaluddin, Syed Saddiq, and Jamie Pang have all been featured using Polar Plunge as part of their daily routines, not just as a marketing gimmick, but as part of their real lifestyle.
Polar Plunge balances education and engagement by maintaining a friendly, approachable brand voice, infused with light humour, clean aesthetics, and a conscious effort to avoid sounding too preachy. All of which help them connect more effectively with their audience.
Growing By Building A Great Product And Genuine Relationships
From the beginning, Polar Plunge has been a self-funded venture. Yang and Steven chose to grow without external capital, focusing instead on refining their product and building genuine relationships with their customers.
“We didn’t raise money. We just built slowly, step by step,” Yang shares.
Today, the brand’s priority lies in enhancing product reliability. Every feature is the result of ongoing feedback from real users, and the team is constantly working to make the plunge system smarter, sleeker, and more user-friendly.
Their commitment to continuous improvement is already drawing attention beyond Malaysia, with regional orders beginning to flow in.
Still, the founders are taking a measured approach to expansion. “We want to scale, but in the right way, not just growing fast, but growing sustainably,” Yang explains.
Yang envisions Polar Plunge becoming the go-to name for cold therapy in Southeast Asia. This includes expanding their team, entering new markets, and evolving their product line to stay ahead of the curve.
“At some point, I’d love to see the brand grow beyond me, maybe even as part of a larger group that shares our vision. But for now, we’re focused on building something real. Something that lasts.”

With wellness growing as a business category in Malaysia and the rest of Southeast Asia, Yang offers a simple but valuable advice for aspiring entrepreneurs in the space: “don’t overthink, just start”.
“If you feel like it’s a good niche and there’s real space for it, go for it.”
He also recommends a couple of books that have guided him on this journey. Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller helped him craft a brand that connects with people, while Principles by Ray Dalio offered the personal and professional clarity, he needed to navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship.
As wellness trends continue to evolve, Polar Plunge stands out not just for introducing cold therapy to Malaysia, but for doing so with heart, intention, and resilience.
Yang and Steven have built more than just a product, they created a movement around mindful recovery and self-improvement.
