From Home Kitchen To Viral Sensation: Clement Lin’s Journey in Building Meet Mee To Be More Than Just Instant Noodles

When Clement Lin founded Meet Mee, his mission was simple yet ambitious, which is to make a healthy Malaysian-style noodles that could be prepared quickly at home, without compromising on taste.

Today, the brand is quietly carving a niche in the competitive instant food space, known especially for its signature Chili Pan Mee.

How A Son’s Love For Pan Mee Sparked A Business

Clement Lin didn’t come from a privileged or strong academic background, and neither did he make it far climbing the corporate ladder. But, what he did have was passion for flavourful food – gained from a deep appreciation for the bowls of Pan Mee his mother lovingly cooked since his childhood.

This personal connection to a humble bowl of noodle inspired him to start a small Pan Mee business in 2002, serving traditional handmade noodles to locals. By 2020, Clement has expanded its Meet Mee Restaurant to a total of six outlets.

“It was really about nostalgia,” Clement said. “My mum would always make Pan Mee at home, and I wanted to share this flavour with more people.”

Pandemic Hit the Restaurant Business

His turning point came during the pandemic, when dine-in customers disappeared. As more people began eating at home, Clement, like many small F&B owners had no choice but to close his restaurant.

This didn’t stop him from thinking ahead.

Instead of giving up, Clement and his team began exploring a new idea: What if they could turn their signature Pan Mee into a convenient, ready-to-cook product that people could prepare for themselves at home?

This led to the birth of Meet Mee’s Signature Chili Pan Mee, crafted to deliver the same rich, handmade flavours, now easily enjoyed from the comfort of home.

Meet Mee Goes Viral

Right after launching their Instant Chili Pan Mee, Clement and the team at Meet Mee saw their product take off like wildfire.

In just one hour on Shopee, they sold a jaw-dropping 42,601 packs — yes, you read that right — and even landed themselves a spot in the Malaysia Book of Records.

But that was just the beginning.

As demand grew, Clement knew they couldn’t stop there. To reach even more Malaysians, Meet Mee took the next big step, applying for Halal certification from JAKIM.

The real turning point came on TikTok. Thanks to some impressive traction on the platform, Meet Mee caught the eye of Malaysia’s beloved food influencer, Khairul Aming. He started featuring their noodles during his live streams, not once, but several times, and the buzz just exploded from there.

“That moment changed everything!” Clement shared. “It showed us that people weren’t just looking for tasty food, they were craving something local, nostalgic, and easy to enjoy anytime.”

From a humble chili pan mee to becoming TikTok’s most popular instant noodle brand, Meet Mee proved that with the right mix of flavour, story, and timing, anything is possible.

His ultimate goal? To share this spicy, comforting bowl of pan mee with their Malay customers too, and hopefully, turn it into one of Malaysia’s most iconic noodle dishes loved by all.

Despite the strong demand, sustaining the growth momentum wasn’t at all easy. One of the Meet Mee’s biggest hurdles was pricing. While customers praised the taste and quality, some began to feel the product was too expensive for a stay-at-home meal, especially as inflation hit household budgets.

Clement also faced the harsh reality of small-scale manufacturing, limited economies of scale, manual processes, and higher input costs. In contrast, large players source by the container and manufacture at scale, allowing them to keep prices low. For Meet Mee, that kind of scale was out of reach, at least for now.

Realities Of An F&B Startup

Running Meet Mee has been anything but smooth. From figuring out packaging to balancing sales with production capacity, Clement had to wear multiple hats. “We didn’t even think about pricing strategy properly at first,” he admits. “We were just trying to make sure the product could reach customers.”

He’s also had to navigate customer perception. “When you lower your price, some people think the quality has dropped. But I want to prove that we can maintain or even improve the quality while making it more affordable.”

Throughout it all, Clement has remained focused on the long game. His aspiration? To make Meet Mee the go-to option for those who want a quick, healthy, and truly Malaysian meal, especially when traditional options like instant noodles don’t fit modern dietary preferences.

What’s Next For Meet Mee?

Recognising the need to stay competitive, Clement made a bold decision, which is to rethink the entire product strategy.

He plans to reintroduce Meet Mee in 2025 with larger portions, improved taste, faster cooking time, and a lower price point without compromising on health or quality.

“We want to deliver a product that’s bigger, better, and more affordable. That’s how we win the mass market.”

To get there, Clement is actively seeking partnerships with larger food manufacturers and investors who can help scale operations through semi-automation and better distribution.

“I believe this is the kind of thing listed companies should support. We know there’s a demand, we just need help reducing our production cost.”

Adaptability Is the Key to Long-Term Success

To young entrepreneurs dreaming of building their own product brand, Clement’s ups and downs in the F&B industry  offers both a dose of reality and fact that dreams can become reality.

He has a practical message for aspiring F&B entrants though, “Don’t assume that good sales mean your business is profitable or sustainable. You must plan ahead for pricing, cost, and capacity.”

He also believes in listening to customers, especially the tough feedback. “The market tells you what’s wrong. Our customers said the product is good, but expensive. That’s our challenge to fix.”

Most importantly, Clement stresses persistence. “You won’t get everything right the first time. But if you care about your product, and you’re willing to adapt, you’ll get there.”

From Heartwarming Beginnings to a Nationwide Brand

Clement Lin’s journey with Meet Mee is a testament to resilience, creativity, and staying true to one’s roots. What began as a humble pan mee stall inspired by his mother’s cooking has grown into a viral, ready-to-eat product embraced by Malaysians across the country and even in Singapore now.

Through the peaks and troughs, from restaurant closures to viral sales, Clement never lost sight of what mattered most, creating food that feels familiar, tastes authentic, and brings people comfort.

As Meet Mee continues to grow, Clement hopes his story reminds aspiring entrepreneurs that success isn’t about having the perfect start, it’s about having the courage to keep going, even when the odds are stacked against you.
