Growing A Modern Sock Brand In Malaysia: How Jaesoul’s Wayne Lim Is Taking It One Step At A Time

Jaesoul's line of socks

Of all the fashion and clothing we own, socks are perhaps the most overlooked part of our daily wear. Most of us do not give it a second though…until we’re stuck with a pair that slips, sags, or just doesn’t last.

25-year-old Malaysian founder of Jaesoul, Wayne Lim, found himself on a mission to sell extraordinary pairs of socks to Malaysians – so no one has to compromise on a comfortable, high-quality and durable pair of socks that was also affordable.

His entrepreneurship journey began with a flash of personal frustration. He realised that most of the socks in the market fell into two extremes: cheap and flimsy, or overpriced and underwhelming.

Tired of having to choose either extreme, Wayne embarked on a journey to manufacture extraordinary pairs of socks, that offer comfort, quality, and durability, at an affordable price-point.

Wayne Always Had An Entrepreneurial Spirit

Wayne’s entrepreneurial roots go back to his school days. Whether it was selling erasers in primary school or working as a Taobao middleman in his teens, he learned early on that understanding what the market needs and delivering quality were key ingredients to success.

Since young, Wayne has also never subscribed to mindset of finding the cheapest possible product. Minimum standard products tend to also create the most problems – and were not worth the price or anguish in the long run. Instead, he believed there was a middle-ground where spending a little more can deliver better quality, comfort and durability in the long run.

This paved the way for him to launch his Jaesoul line of affordable and high-quality socks.

Meaning Behind Jaesoul Brand

Rather than just a catchy name that he liked, “Jaesoul” carries actual meaning for Wayne. “Jae” means “ability” in Korean, and “soul” represents individuality. Put together, it perfectly captures Wayne’s mission for his brand — to create a pair of socks that was functional, durable and give confidence to those who wear it.

For Wayne, developing each line of Jaesoul socks is a meticulous process. It starts with identifying problems people face with regular version of the socks people were wearing: slipping, poor support, moisture retention, thin, uncomfortable, coming loose after a few wash — the list goes on.

Rather than following the latest design trends or innovating for the sake of it, Wayne tries to solve the underlying problem with each line of his Jaesoul socks.

Compression technology for support, moisture-wicking fabrics for comfort, and anti-microbial properties for freshness — each Jaesoul line of socks is crafted with purpose. Whether you’re hitting the gym, going for a run, dressing for work, or just lounging at home, there’s a pair of Jaesoul sock that fits.

Learning Big Lessons In The School Of Hard Knocks

Like many new startups run by a first-time founder, Jaesoul’s initial launch wasn’t an instant success. His first product, a pair of basic cotton crew sock, flopped – selling just five pairs in six months. It was a humbling moment for Wayne.

He also learned a few hard lessons. Just creating a good product wasn’t enough. He needed to understand the problems people were having with their existing pair of socks, and solve the real problems.

Even then, it would mean nothing if people didn’t know about his brand, mission and the quality of his socks. He had to engage the right audiences and market his product.

With these lessons still fresh in his mind, he pivoted with his second line of socks. The second launch featured his No Show Socks line, designed for comfort and practicality. This time, the response was overwhelming. The right product, paired with the right message, finally struck a chord with customers.

Jaesoul's No Show Socks

Growing a clothing brand at 25 comes with its fair share of challenges. For Wayne, one of the toughest is also managing his cash flow and expenses. Early on, when he was an unknown, suppliers required upfront payments, which pressured his finances, especially as he also had to forecast sales demand. This was made trickier as each new batch could take several months before final product was in his hands to sell.

Building trust over time by always making timely payments, growing his brand’s visibility and being able to forecast his demand better, he has been able to secure more favourable payment terms.

While Wayne did not sign up to manage cash flow and business finances, he realised it is part and parcel of an entrepreneur’s responsibility. He still acknowledges that it isn’t his strongest trait, but that just means he has to work harder to become better.

Wayne enjoys other aspects of building his Jaesoul line of socks, though. He focuses heavily on marketing and sales – constantly crafting new campaigns to promote his socks.

Wayne believes that trust is earned through transparency and connection – and has engaged customers from the early innings of his entrepreneurship journey. Today, he has built a community of customers who swear by his products. These loyal customers are more than happy to buy new launches and share their stories on social media, especially on Facebook and Instagram.

The Future of Socks With Jaesoul

Wayne acknowledges that his entrepreneurship journey is just in its infancy. Looking ahead, he envisions Jaesoul expanding into new styles, colours, and categories while maintaining a laser focus on quality and affordability.

He shares that Jaesoul has upcoming projects such as their new Xocks line, a brand that embraces vibrant, playful designs, and hints at an exciting future.

In the next five years, Wayne hopes Jaesoul will become a brand synonymous with socks that Malaysians trust. He also has ambitions to expand beyond Malaysia’s borders and uncover more opportunities in the global marketplace.
