Google Career Certificate: What Is It (And How SMEs Can Apply For Free)

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs), which are at the heart of Singapore’s economy, play a pivotal role in the country’s transformation under the Smart Nation initiative. With the advancement of technology and its wider adoption in areas like e-commerce, artificial intelligence (AI), and robotics, SMEs must also grow digitally by making use of these digital solutions.

On this front, as a public-private initiative, Google is making available 15,000 Google Career Certificate scholarships to 300 businesses to help kickstart their digitalisation journey by partnering with Enterprise Singapore (Enterprise SG) and SGTech.

What Are Google Career Certificates?

The Google Career Certificate, launched as the third pathway under Google’s Skills Ignition SG, helps Singaporeans be equipped with in-demand digital skills such as IT support, data analytics, digital marketing, and project management.

To ensure that learners have the necessary theory and practical skills to perform in an entry-level job, subject matter experts and senior practitioners at Google developed the certificates. Some of the industry experts that were consulted for the material include the Project Management Institute, Tableau, and Figma, ensuring the quality and relevance of the content.

There are no eligibility criteria or background knowledge prerequisites to enrol in any of the certificate courses. Learners can access these certificates completely online through Coursera for a monthly subscription fee of S$49 per month.

How SMEs Can Apply And Benefit From Google Career Certificate

SMEs that wish to grow their digital capabilities can sign up as many as 50 employees for free until 18 December 2024 as part of the Google Career Certificate Scholarships. It will help employees be trained in various in-demand digital skills to take on entry-level roles in the organisation to help with its digitalisation journey.

The certificate courses, which can be completed within 3 to 6 months with 10 hours of study per week, can be learned at any time, allowing greater flexibility for employees.

Interested companies can apply for the Google Career Certificate Scholarships in two ways:

  • If you’re a SGTech member, sign up here.
  • For all other businesses, you can sign up via Enterprise Singapore through Coursera.

Upon registration, companies could expect to receive a reply within two weeks of their application.

What Are The Courses That Employees Can Apply

Currently, there are a total of 8 courses available under the Google Career Certificate Scholarships that companies can enrol their employees in.

#1 Advanced Data Analytics:

This advanced level program is recommended if you have prior knowledge of foundational analytical principles, skills, and tools.

Through the course, you will learn in-demand skills in statistical analysis, Python, regression models, and machine learning, enabling you to perform roles, such as senior data analyst, junior data scientist, and data science analyst. These professionals are responsible for collecting, analysing, and interpreting extremely large amounts of data within organisations.

You can expect to complete the course in 6 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.

#2 Business Intelligence:

This advanced level program is recommended if you have prior knowledge of foundational analytical principles, skills, and tools.

Through the course, you will learn in-demand skills in data modelling, data visualization, and dashboarding and reporting enabling you to perform roles, such as business intelligence analyst, business intelligence engineer, and business intelligence developer. These professionals help organisations collect, structure, interpret and report on business data to help stakeholders make informed decisions.

You can expect to complete the course in 2 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.

#3 Digital Marketing & E-commerce:

This is a beginner level program that does not require any degree or experience.

Through the course, you will learn the fundamentals of digital marketing and e-commerce, measure marketing performance through analytics and present insights, attract and engage customers through digital marketing channels like search and email and build e-commerce stores. This will prepare you for roles like marketing coordinator, E-commerce associate, and paid search specialist.

You can expect to complete the course in 6 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.

#4 Data Analytics

This is a beginner level program that does not require any degree or experience.

Through the course, you will get an understanding of the practices and processes used by a junior data analyst, including how to clean and organise data for analysis, acquire key analytical skills, and be able to visualise and present data findings in dashboards. This will enable you to perform roles such as data analyst.

You can expect to complete the course in 6 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.

#5 IT Support

This is a beginner level program that does not require any degree or experience.

Through the course, you will learn to provide end-to-end customer support, perform day-to-day IT support tasks, and use systems. Once completed, you could perform roles such as help desk technician, IT technician, and database administrator.

You can expect to complete the course in 6 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.

#6 IT Automation

This is a beginner level program that does not require any degree or experience.

Through the course, you will learn skills like Python, Git, and IT automation, enabling you to analyse real-world IT problems and implement the appropriate strategies to solve them.

You can expect to complete the course in 6 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.

#7 UX Design

This is a beginner level program that does not require any degree or experience.

Through the course, you will be able to understand the basics of UX research and create a professional UX portfolio that includes 3 end-to-end projects: a mobile app, a responsive website, and a cross-platform experience. This will allow you to perform job roles such as    User Experience (UX) designer, UI designer, and interaction designer.

You can expect to complete the course in 6 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.

#8 Project Management

This is a beginner level program that does not require any degree or experience.

Through the course, you will learn the foundations of Agile project management, create effective project documentation and practice strategic communication, problem-solving and stakeholder management through real-world scenarios. This will enable you to qualify for roles such as project manager, project coordinator, and project assistant.

You can expect to complete the course in 6 months, assuming 10 hours of study a week.
