5 Questions With… is an initiative to feature local entrepreneurs and give you a glimpse into their daily lives – how they live, work, and play. This week, we speak to Simon Goh, Co-Founder of Square Face Monkey.
Square Face Monkey is a homegrown shop that started selling products on Facebook Live in 2019. Run by Simon and his wife Liyan, they previously had a physical retail shop, but have since migrated to fully online operations. They sell their own unique t-shirt designs as well as carefully-curated products from quality partner brands all over Singapore.
5 Things That Are Always In Your Daily Routine
- Sourcing and testing out new products for our customers.
- Discussions with our brand partners and staff on operations and how we can do things better.
- Attending to customers’ questions, billing matters, and requests.
- I also enjoy watching other peoples’ Facebook Live videos and learning from them.
- Starting my day and ending it with prayers.
4 Tools You Cannot Live Without
Handphone Stand: It might just be a small little plastic stand, but we cannot go “live” without it! It is our ever dependable best friend since day one of our business.
Facebook: Literally, the lifeline of our ‘live’ business, where we connect with new and existing viewers and the main way we earn a living!
WhatsApp: We have a WhatsApp chat with our Square Face Monkey partner merchants, where we casually share ideas and information. I appreciate the close-knit and friendly community in which we can continually communicate and collaborate with one another.
Google Sheets: A really important tool that I use together with my admin team to manage our orders, billing, and shipping collaboratively, especially when everyone is working remotely in our own homes.
3 Books That Had The Biggest Impact On You
Discussion on Youth: This is a book that my wife and I have read since our younger days! The book provides insightful answers and timeless encouragement to pertinent issues that young people face.
The Human Revolution: This book is by my mentor, Dr Daisaku Ikeda, in which he chronicles his efforts to meet with and inspire ordinary people to undertake a positive transformation within themselves and contribute positively to society and the world.
One Piece: I have always been a fan of the One Piece comics! I am very thankful for this creation. It not only sparks our creativity, but the main character in the story, Monkey D. Luffy, encourages us to follow my passion and keep being passionate, no matter what adversities we may face in life.
2 Role Models You Look Up To – And Why
Dr Daisaku Ikeda: UN Peace Prize recipient Dr Ikeda’s guiding philosophy has always been that every person possess the inherent potential for greatness, and that we all have a part to play in promoting culture and peace, by bringing people together. We try to put these into practice in our work.
Jack Ma: Mr Ma’s never give up spirit inspires us greatly. Amid his success, he continues to devote lots of time to give encouragement and advice to budding entrepreneurs, which gives us tremendous hope and direction. I also admire the respect he has for his employees, and this is what we also want to build in our own team.
