Taylor Swift Eras Tour: The Greatest Music Business Of All Time?

Running from March 2023 to August 2024, Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has taken the world by storm. The Eras tour is her sixth concert tour – and will be her most expansive with 152 shows across five continents.

As its title suggests, the Eras Tour will take fans across the Taylor Swift Eras – covering 44 songs in the process.

Singapore is the only Eras Tour pit-stop in South East Asia, and one of only two Asian countries, with Japan being the other country that Taylor Swift will be playing at. Given the overwhelming demand for tickets, she expanded the Singapore-leg from the initial 3 shows to 6 shows. They will run on 2-4 and 7-9 March 2024.

The popularity of Taylor Swift is not unique to Singapore. In fact, according to a Rolling Stone article published in December 2023, her Eras Tour is on track to become the highest-grossing tour of all time and the first ever to surpass $1 billion in revenue.

#1 Eras Tour: Taylor Swift Will Perform 152 Shows

Since Taylor Swift announced her Eras Tour in November 2022, the tour has been expanded at least ten times to 152 shows. This includes the three additional concerts announced in Singapore. New shows have also been announced for Los Angeles, Australia and Europe.

The close-to-year-and-a-half Eras Tour will also see Taylor Swift performing across five continents. After the US-leg, which ends in August 2023, the international-leg will start – with four concerts in Mexico as the first pit-stop.

#2 Taylor Swift’s Latest Eras Tour Is Estimated To Make US$1.4 Billion

Even before the additional concert dates were announced, estimates for its total gross revenue was at the US$1.4 billion-mark. According to Forbes calculation, the Eras Tour could generate US$2 billion in ticker revenue by the end of it.

Based on the calculation of 152 shows, each night that Taylor Swift performs will rake in about US$13.1 million in ticket sales. This would exclude other revenue, such as merchandise and sponsorships.

#3 7.1 Million Fans Will Watch Taylor Swift Perform Her Eras Tour

According to Pollstar, an average of 53,923 tickets are sold per Eras Tour show. This means Taylor Swift will be performing for 7.1 million concert-goers. Do note this estimate is based on an earlier number of 131 concerts.

Creatively dividing the numbers, we can also tell that each concert-goer will fork an average of approximately US$200 (or SG$270) for a ticket.

#4 Taylor’s Economic Impact Could Be Much Higher – At US$5 Billion

There have been reports of “world leaders begging Taylor Swift to visit their country”. It may not be far-fetched either, considering her popularity as an artiste, the scale of the Eras Tour, and, more importantly, the possible economic benefits that may be attributed to her performance.

A national study by QuestionPro estimates that Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour may generate US$5 billion in economic impact by the end of the tour. Concert-goers are estimated to spend US$1,300 per show. This will benefit the local economy in each of the city she visits, including flights, hotels, F&B businesses, local attractions and other discretionary spendings.

Such mega concerts have been blamed as a cause of inflation in Sweden – when Beyonce’s concert visited Sweden in May. Since Singapore is the only South East Asian pit-stop on the Eras Tour, it’s unsurprising we’re about to hit the road with Taylor’s Version of travel inflation.
