The husband-wife duo are even recognised on Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But their journey didn\u2019t begin in high-tech boardrooms. Waran began tinkering with AI and machine learning, while Renu turned toward art, drawing and painting. Their interests collided when Waran joined an AR bootcamp at UTM, and helped build a virtual try-on app for shirts that clinched second place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the competition, Renu suggested expanding the idea into jewellery. Like many women, she\u2019d struggled to find earrings online that matched her outfits for events. Waran researched solutions and stumbled upon Snapchat\u2019s Lens Studio, a tool that allowed them to build virtual try-on filters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat small project made us realise we could solve real-world problems through interactive tech,\u201d Renu explains. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just about looking cool. It was about creating experiences people needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, they drew inspiration from Pixar, a brand synonymous with creativity. But the sellers were sceptical. \u201cPeople didn\u2019t understand AR, and Snapchat wasn\u2019t widely used in Malaysia,\u201d Renu says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hence, Waran and Renu decided to create AR filters purely for fun and learning. \u201cWe kept experimenting,\u201d Waran shares. \u201cThere were hardly any tutorials, so we learned everything ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming from lower-middle-class backgrounds, they faced significant pressure to get stable jobs. To survive, they juggled side gigs, tutoring, selling lead-generation services, and creating AR templates online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then came a pivotal moment. Waran noticed an open application for Snapchat\u2019s Official Lens Creator (OLC) programme. Despite doubts, he applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Weeks later, they received a call. Snapchat had been tracking their prolific filter creations and impressive engagement numbers. As the platform expanded into Asia, ExAR was hired as consultants, tasked with training creators across Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and India. Brands urgently pivoted to online engagement, and demand for Instagram filters and interactive experiences skyrocketed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur business boomed during the pandemic,\u201d Waran recalls. \u201cBrands finally saw the value in immersive experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They expanded from social filters into web-based AR experiences, completing major projects like an interactive campaign for Honda. Today, they\u2019ve delivered more than 50 projects for over 30 clients, becoming a sought-after name in Malaysia\u2019s creative-tech landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"scaling-with-a-lean-team\"><strong><strong>Scaling With A Lean Team<\/strong><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/exarofficial\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ExAR<\/a>\u00a0operates on a mostly project-based model, about 90% of their work comes from brands or agencies seeking tailored interactive solutions. This depth allows them to innovate quickly and build tools that genuinely impact marketing results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An example is their AI-powered skin analysis tool for Cetaphil, which scans users\u2019 faces to identify skin concerns and suggest products. \u201cIt\u2019s essentially a complex AI system,\u201d Waran explains. \u201cBut calling it an \u2018AI Skin Analyser\u2019 makes it clear and relatable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, despite their impressive portfolio, ExAR\u2019s core team remains small. The company is still run by Waran, Renu, and Arun. Rather than hiring a large in-house staff, they\u2019ve built a global network of talented creators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis model lets us stay agile and keep costs manageable,\u201d Renu says. \u201cIt also means we can take on big projects without being bogged down by heavy overheads.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ExAR has bootstrapped its growth entirely, reinvesting profits into new technologies and skill development. Since 2019, they\u2019ve achieved approximately 30% year-on-year revenue growth, no small feat for a company of their size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>ExAR has big ambitions for the next few years. One major project is developing an AI-powered installation guide for a global smart door lock company, enabling users to set up their devices using only their phone camera and voice instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to become a global interactive content agency,\u201d Waran says. \u201cWe want marketing and advertising agencies worldwide to see us as their growth partner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"always-understand-your-customers\"><strong>Always Understand Your Customers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Waran and Renu\u2019s biggest takeaway is simple but powerful, which is to start with people, not technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cKnow your users better than you know the tech,\u201d Renu says. \u201cWe thought virtual try-ons would revolutionise retail. But in Malaysia, people still love physical shopping. We had to pivot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waran adds, \u201cDon\u2019t be discouraged if people call your niche too small. Focus and expertise will always give you an edge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From uncertain university students to recognised creative-tech pioneers, the founders of ExAR Technologies prove that passion,
