Born in 1952 in Malacca, Tuan Haji Zainal\u2019s path to horological mastery began far from home. He travelled to Geneva, Switzerland, in 1970 to train in watchmaking at Stern Feres Fabrique de Cadrans, a subsidiary of the prestigious Patek Philippe. It was there he first encountered the exacting standards and artistry that has come to define the Swiss watchmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the next five decades, he poured his expertise into some of the world\u2019s most renowned watch brands, contributing to the design and manufacturing of names like Rado, Longines, Omega, Hublot, and Tag Heuer, across manufacturing hubs in Hong Kong, China, and Taiwan. Yet, even as he helped build legacies for other brands, he felt incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMalaysia has talented people and a rich culture,\u201d he reflects. \u201cBut, we have no watch brand that stands on the world stage. I wanted to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Dream Takes Shape<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 2016, driven by a vision to fuse Swiss-level precision with Malaysia\u2019s cultural identity, Tuan Haji Zainal founded Fateh Watches<\/a>. The brand\u2019s mission was clear, which is to craft luxury timepieces that are not only technically second-to-none, but also deeply rooted in Malaysian heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From its earliest designs, Fateh set itself apart. The dials often feature patterns inspired by songket, the traditional woven fabric rich with gold and silver threads. The presence of the Bunga Raya, Malaysia\u2019s national flower, frequently appears as a tribute to national pride. For Tuan Haji Zainal, every design choice was a statement of where he came from and what he wanted the world to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFateh means victory. For me, it represents Malaysia\u2019s victory in showing we can create something world-class and deeply ours,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building a Brand from the Ground Up<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Launching Fateh was no small feat. In the beginning, Tuan Haji Zainal personally sold his watches at small booths, pop-up markets, and even outside local mosques in Shah Alam. He believed in building trust one conversation at a time, educating customers about the craftsmanship behind each timepiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By 2018, his son, Fitry Zainal, took the helm, bringing fresh energy and a modern vision to the brand. While continuing direct selling, Fitry recognised that Fateh needed a digital presence to grow further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He revamped the brand\u2019s website, invested in social media, and embraced online advertising, shifting Fateh from a small-scale operation to a company ready to connect with a national and eventually global audience. A documentary was also produced, chronicling Tuan Haji Zainal\u2019s extraordinary journey through the world of Swiss watchmaking. The film not only humanised the brand but also established its credibility in an industry where trust and craftsmanship go hand in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Niche to National <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Key milestones have helped Fateh Watches transform from a personal vision into a recognised premium brand. The launch of their first model, the Discovery I, confirmed that Malaysians were eager to support a homegrown luxury brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under Fitry\u2019s leadership, the company expanded its product line. Initially, Fateh released only one model per year, with runs limited to 600 pieces. Today, they\u2019re scaling up to produce two or three new designs annually, increasing both variety and availability for their growing customer base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, Fateh Watches was awarded the Malaysia Good Design Award 2023 for their Legacy Series. For Tuan Haji Zainal, this was more than an industry accolade. It was a validation of his belief that Malaysia can stand shoulder to shoulder with the finest watchmaking nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis award proves that our designs, which combine Swiss precision with Malaysian culture, are not only beautiful but worthy of recognition on a global stage,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenges and Convictions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Building Fateh has not been without obstacles. One significant challenge has been convincing Malaysians and the world that the country can produce watches worthy of luxury status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMalaysia has no established framework for a watchmaking industry,\u201d Tuan Haji Zainal explains. \u201cPeople naturally have doubts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overcoming those doubts meant drawing on decades of international relationships. With guidance from Swiss horology experts and seasoned watchmakers, Fateh established processes and standards that rival global brands. Yet, the brand never strayed from its roots. Every timepiece remains a tribute to Malaysia\u2019s rich cultural tapestry, crafted with materials and designs that tell a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another challenge was maintaining quality during growth. Fateh ensures excellence by controlling every stage, from design inspired by local heritage to rigorous testing for durability and precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur watches meet Swiss-grade standards, but they also carry a part of Malaysia,\u201d he says proudly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking to the Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fateh Watches is ready for its next chapter. The brand plans to open a dedicated sales gallery in Shah Alam, offering customers an immersive experience where they can explore timepieces in a setting that reflects Fateh\u2019s blend of luxury and cultural pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s ambitions extend far beyond selling watches. Fateh is developing plans for Malaysia\u2019s first Horology School, aiming to cultivate local talent and establish the country as a credible player in global watchmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur vision is not just to build a brand,\u201d Tuan Haji Zainal emphasises. \u201cWe\u2019re building an industry. One day, I want to see Malaysia producing its own in-house movements that can compete with Swiss or Japanese calibres.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked what advice he would give other Malaysians considering niche manufacturing, Tuan Haji Zainal\u2019s response is thoughtful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBe bold and patient. It\u2019s not just about launching a product, it\u2019s about building a legacy. Set high standards from the start. Even if you\u2019re small, think globally. And remember, if the ecosystem doesn\u2019t exist yet, create it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
